Press Release: 3rd Field Trial

In the weeks between May 07-24, 2024, the BorderUAS Consortium organized and carried out the 3rd installment of their planned field-trials in the vicinity of Orestiada city, to successfully conclude the testing and validation of BorderUAS system. More specifically, it is an EU-funded Project that coupled a multi-sensor payload with various data analysis models to underpin Border surveillance duties at EU’s external Frontiers. To that end, the final installment in the 3-Pilot series underwent a meticulous 2-week planning process, before the way could be paved for the field-trial’s main operational phase. In brief, the initial two (2) weeks of the 3rd field-trial deployment were allocated to:

  • The transportation and assemblage of equipment comprising the BorderUAS system’s Air (i.e. sensors, cameras, auxiliary electronic equipment etc.) & Ground segments’ (i.e. front-end applications desk, servers, Antenna receivers etc.) installations in the designated Operational Grounds (Week 1, May 07-12).
  • The technical checks and test recordings that were carried out to ensure the proper functioning and finetuning of the comprehensive BorderUAS system ahead of the operational phase inauguration (Week 2, May 13-19).

Upon the timely conclusion of the herein before preparatory stages, the 3rd field-trial witnessed a seamless induction to its operational phase (Week 3, May 20-24). Herein, the BorderUAS’ sub-systems (multi-sensor payload, back-end analytics, front-end applications etc.) were rigorously tested, by means of realistic daily scenario executions, as to the below-listed ends:

  • The comprehensive integration of BorderUAS sub-systems.
  • The fusion of accumulated heterogenous data sources.
  • The testing of detection, tracking, geolocalization & land segmentation algorithms in support of C2’s (Command & Control Room) functionalities and the Patrol Teams’ on-site duties.
  • The familiarization of BorderUAS’ End-users with the above-mentioned systems and front-end applications set to assist them with their day-by-day operational & tactical duties,
  • The improvement of synergies between the Law Enforcement Agencies (End-users) involved with the BorderUAS Project, through their joint participation in a series of scenarios touching upon the various operational facets of Border surveillance activities, such as the detection & apprehension of trespassing and smuggling activities, the conduction of Search and Rescue Missions (SaR), the monitoring of suspected vehicles and so on.

In the aftermath of operational phase’s subscribed events, the assembled BorderUAS Consortium members (Technical Partners, End-users) proceeded to validate the 3rd field-trial’s end-results. To that end, all involved actors under their respective capacities evaluated the 3-field-trial series outcome, through a series of fruitful face-to-face meetings and submission of Questionnaire forms.

Conclusively, the last of BorderUAS’ field-trials provided participants with useful lessons-learned, as well as significant data accumulations to further future research purposes.
